From the outside, the Fat Duck does not look like Roald Dahl’s playhouse. Subtle and understated- from the service to the décor, the low-slung ceilings give a sense of history when much tinier people inhabited England and staff glides smoothly arms raised at 90-degree angles.

Hardly a punishment for naughty children, the Fat Duck has spurned worldwide mania without anyone having to fall into a chocolate river or be turned purple.
